Attractions In Chelsea, New York: Its Historic District
If you plan to visit New York, you should take time to visit all its diverse neighborhoods. Among the current popular communities is that found in Chelsea. The presence of everything from a thriving art’s community to trendy shopping and a world class innovative park – the High Line, explains why penthouses for sale in Chelsea New York are hard to come by.
One reason why people visit the area is to breathe in its history. Chelsea may be trendy but it has been an industrial area and home to a staunch middle class for decades. Some of the past has been preserved in a designated and recognized area called the Chelsea Historic District. It was established first by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1970 (extension of the area was made in 1981) and made the National Register of Historic Places in 1977 (expansion of the area accepted in 1982).
Old Chelsea New York
The land covered by the Chelsea Historic District once was owned by Captain Thomas Clarke and his heirs in the 18th century. The original intent by one such descendent, Clement Clarke Moore, was to sell it for the construction of residences for the upper class. This never materialized. Instead, row houses were to spring up. They reflected a variety of styles including Greek Revival and Italianate.
Apartment blocks and multi-home dwelling sprung up in the area. The most famous of these was London Terrace. Dating from 1930, it was touted as the largest apartment block in the world. Throughout the years, the neighborhood continued to avoid the “quality.” It remained strongly middle class.
What to Look for in the Area
The styles of the Historic District vary in Chelsea New York. While they generally are townhouses – some turned into apartments, they reflect the architectural mish-mash that was the 19th century. These include the ever popular Italianate and Greek Revival styles. A classic example of the latter style is a row house at 339 West from the Civil War era. There are excellent examples of wrought iron work adorning and comprising graceful gates and fences. Be sure to look up to admire the roofs and the placement of classically designed busts that stare down at you from their exterior posts.
Settling in
Penthouses for sale in Chelsea New York are a reality but not always easy to find. If you are fortunate, you will be able to find one that offers you with a view of the area’s history, a glimpse of when people once lived and worked in the Chelsea Historic District.
